VOICES OF COURAGE
Reviewed by Melissa Lujan, MCSR intern
The devastation of his sister’s sexual assault caused Michael
Domitrz to devote his life’s work to educating society about
healthy dating, communication, consent, respect and sexual
assault awareness. Through “Voices of Courage,” he shares the
stories of twelve survivors of sexual assault. The stories are
straight from the survivor’s heart and every line is nothing
short of breathtaking. In an early section of the book one
survivor, Shirley, concludes, “If we hold the suffering of
yesterday in one hand and the worries about tomorrow in the
other, we have no hands for today” (15). The words speak clearly
about what the survivors want each reader to take from their
stories. This book does what many books on the subject should
have done; it takes real instances, real men, real women and
real feelings and shares them with the world. The words of the
survivors are raw and show a passion that is infectious.
All of the survivors explain the importance of finding support
from those who believe in them. Cheri admits, “The most
important part of my recovery was having my family with me; they
were always very supportive and available to talk” (65). In the
healing process it is important for the survivors to find
themselves, and also to have people who support their process
and give them extra hope.
Every voice hopes to raise awareness, every voice wants to reach
out in a way that prevents at least one other person from being
sexually assaulted. The survivors repeatedly use their
experiences to benefit others. One survivor, Angela, explains,
“Everyone wishes that sexual victimization would end, but I wish
for more than that. I wish to save lives – the lives of
potential victims as well as potential predators” (87). Another
example of the hope that sharing their stories will help others
comes from Gabriel who says, “I tell my story every chance I
get, hoping that it may help someone else begin to heal” (60).
They share their stories with the world because it helps not
only to better their lives, but also the lives of those who are
touched by their words. At the end of each account all the
survivors emphasize the strength gained through finding their
voices, a strength they have always had but not shared with
themselves or the world. With this book, Michael Domitrz has
given survivors one more opportunity to show their strength, to
tell their stories, to present twelve ‘voices of courage’.
